“For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.  Good people bring good things out of the good stored up in them” (Mat 12:34b-35a)

Often when we think of sowing and reaping, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is our finances. This is vital, however our stewardship in Christ involves more than just that area; it also encompasses our time, our reputation, our relationships, our thoughts, and our dreams. We sow into all these aspects of life in one way or another. The challenge we face before God is this: in this areas, are we sowing into our spirits, or into our flesh? In the words of IHOP musician Justin Rizzo, "I'm doing one or the other all the time."

Perhaps one of the most critical areas is the words that we sow. In Genesis 1, God spoke, and the earth came into existence. We are made in the image of God, and so our words also carry a creative power through the Holy Spirit within us.

Not only that, but our words also have the power to destroy too! Proverbs 18:21 states that “death and life are in the power of the tongue”. It then states that we’ll eat the fruit that it bears forth!

In sowing the right words, we can reap a harvest of encouragement in the lives of those around us, and we can transform the atmosphere at our homes, schools, and workplaces to ones of gratitude and hope. Proverbs 13:3 says, “they who guard they lips guard their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

Since the mouth speaks out of the overflow of the heart, we may need to dig a bit deeper if we find ourselves in a place of consistently speaking negativity forth, and open our hearts to receive healing from our Heavenly Parent.

I am challenged constantly to watch my tongue, and to keep myself in check about what I say. James 3:9-12 speaks of the duplicity of an untamed tongue; out of the same mouth can come praise and cursing. This should not be, and so we should strive in God’s strength for alignment in our words, that our conversations may always be full of grace.

In sowing into our spirits through words of praise, we will reap a harvest of righteousness, blessing, and abundance in our lives.
