Passion and Compassion

I find it very interesting that passion is part of the word compassion.  I had an epiphany this morning that in order for us to have compassion we first have to have the passion.  Did you know that passion comes from a Greek word paschō, which means suffer?  It struck me that passion is not just an emotion, but something that runs so deep, that in Jesus’ case it was a passion unto death.  Jesus suffered for his passion, which were God’s people.  NOW THAT is passion!

It is a passion that I want burning in me; it is a passion that will propel me into compassion for others.  I also find it so interesting that compassion (noun) means to suffer together with!

In Matthew 22v37 (the Msg) the word says this:
Jesus said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.' This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: 'Love others as well as you love yourself (compassion).' These two commands are pegs; everything in God's Law and the Prophets hangs from them."

We have to learn to get our minds off ourselves and move into a place where God’s passion is burning so brightly within us that we can’t wait to show compassion to those around us.  We are saved by grace (Acts 15v11); it is our turn to show other people that same grace of God.  I can’t tell you how often I pray for compassion for others.  It doesn’t come naturally to many of us, we live in a world where we are suppose to only look out for number one! Ourselves!  But in God’s kingdom, things don’t work the same, the more we forget about our struggles and focus on making life better for others, the more blessed we become.  It is how it works with God.  See how in Matt 22v37 the word says that these two things are the very 2 pegs everything in God’s law hangs from! Wow, so simple yet so hard.

May I challenge you today to get your mind off yourself and your problems and reach out and help someone else.  It will be such a blessing to someone else, but also you.  Pray for compassionate hearts everyday.
