The Heart of Worship
Shortly before DGFC’s Sunday evening service, the lights went out. There seemed to be an electrical fault in the area, and so we had no electricity for the duration of the service.
I almost wrote “we had no power”, but that would be inaccurate. As reliant as we have become on electricity as modern humankind, our source of power and strength is not our municipal substation, or anything else made by human hands.
Make no mistake; I love the benefits that have been granted to us through the invention of the lightbulb. (Being a keyboardist, I very much like being able to plug into a power outlet, so that I can switch on my instrument!)
Electricity does give us powerful speakers with which to amplify the beautiful sound coming out of our worship; colourful lights help create a wonderful atmosphere as we engage with Almighty God. These things are incredible enhancements that God has given us to be used in our modern worship setting.
But when it comes down to it, when it’s all stripped away, it’s just me and my heart before God. It’s just you and your heart before God.
On Sunday, amidst the warm, intimate glow of candlelight, we all worshiped God together, with warm hearts lifted to Jesus. I believe that in it, the Lord was reminding us that God is all we need. We are to depend upon God as our only real “power source” in life and in our worship.
Jesus said it this way:
“But the time is coming - indeed it’s here now - when true worshipers will worship God in spirit and in truth. God is looking for those who will worship God that way.” (John 4:23, NLT)
God is most concerned with what is going on inside - in our hearts. We are called to be authentic in our worship to God, no matter how spectacular it may appear on the outside.
As Matt Redman wrote, “I’m coming back to the heart of worship. And it’s all about you, Jesus.”
Connect with Jesus today. Begin to thank Him for what He has done. Fix your eyes upon him, worship him and give him all the glory and honour he deserves. Worship God in spirit and in truth.
